42nd Annual Turkey Trot

USATF Certified #VT05002RF
November 22, 2018
Burlington, VT

The 2018 GMAA Turkey Trot saw some different weather from last year. The temperature at the start was around 10 degrees Fahrenheit but below zero with the wind chill. The course was slick with ice at times and deep with snow at others. With the National Weather Center forecasting record cold temperatures, fewer runners turned out. We had 177 hearty souls who were willing to brave the weather for the 5K and 7 kids for the kids’ race. Not a good day for spectators, but we still had a few of them as well! As always, the run benefited the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf. Approximately 271 pounds of food and just over $400 in cash and checks was donated to the Food Shelf!

The top male finisher was returning champion Matt Solomon of Winooski with a time of 19:15. He was followed by Sam Barritt of South Burlington with a time of 20:17 and Sam Noel of Shelburne with a time of 20:26. The top female finisher was returning champion Catherine Cook of South Burlington who crossed the line at 23:09. She was followed by Cate Noel of Shelburne with a time of 23:20 and Jenny Land-Mackenzie who traveled over from Peacham and ran a time of 24:00.

The race was co-directed again this year by Tom Nuovo and Howard Kalfus. Anne Treadwell once again organized a fabulous kids' race! As usual, a cadre of additional, outstanding volunteers made setup, registration, the kids' race and 5K as well as the raffle a smooth venture. Those volunteers were Newton Baker, Chance Crocker, Carrie Fenn, Sylvie Frisbie, Anna Kalfus, Lee Krohn, Carlie Krolick, Joe Landry, Mike Landry, Steven Lipman, Bob Monette, Allie Nerenberg, Erin Randall-Mullins, Wayne Reisberg, Bob Sayers, Chris Viscomi and Kirsten Wiley.

Local businesses again generously donated valuable prizes which were raffled off. Each volunteer and each runner received one free raffle ticket. Many thanks go out to those generous businesses: Ben & Jerry's, Edge Sports & Fitness, Hoka One One, Leunigs Bistro, RunVermont and Ski Rack. Thanks also to the Nuovo family for donating local maple syrup!
