History of the Trollheim 5K
The Trollheim 5K is a unique Vermont race. It was started by the Al and Sally Duval back in 1977 and they are still directing it today! The race is held at their house (where there is a big "Trollheim" sign).  The race has changed little since 1977. The cost is still $2. Runners simply put their money into a "bucket" at take change as needed. After the race, hotdogs are grilled and lemonade and stream cooled beer is served. There is no pre-registration, bib numbers, or any other fancy racing gear - just runners lining up on the same old dirt road running a 5K. Another interesting thing to note is that instead of having mile markers, kilometers are markered (this probably comes from the Duval's cross country skiing background). The prizes are Sally's pottery. If an older runner wants to experience the nostalgia of pre-boom racing or a younger runner wants to see "what it used to be like" this is the race! In recent years as many as 50-60 students from St. Michael's College have run this race as a close-out of the spring semester (and a way to see what it used to be like when their parents raced!) 

The Trollheim 5K has sometimes been called the "Spring Opener" since it usually held around May 1, when the weather starts to become reliably warmer. The Duvals used to host a fall race in the same location called the Vagabond 10K. The Vagabond, which had the same atmosphere of the 5K race, was last held in the mid 1980's. Together the two races were called the "Duval's party races". Thanks to Al and Sally for putting on such nice races all these years!
