History of the Archie Post Five Miler

The Archie Post Five Miler is the oldest race in Vermont. It was started in 1969 by Bill Nedde, the track coach at UVM. The race was to honor former 40 year UVM coach and hall of famer Archie Post. UVM was the official race director from the race’s inception through 1980. The GMAA took over race directing responsibilities in 1981 when NCAA rules changed and prohibited college athletes from competing in road races during the season. UVM has continued to be a slient sponsor, allowing the GMAA to use Gutterson Field House lobby and the Archie Post fields.

The Archie Post course has changed several times over the years. The initial course started at the Kwiniaska Golf Course on Spear Street and went due north to the Gutterson driveway. This course actually varied slightly year to year between 5.0 and 5.2 miles. From 1981 to 1984 the course was essentially the same, but the start was moved to make the course exactly 5.0 miles. In 1985 the start of the race was moved to Governor’s Lane to get some of the race off of increasingly busy Spear Street. As traffic on Spear continued to increase, the course was again moved in 1995. The start of this version was at the corner of Dorset and Barstow and followed Dorset and Swift before returning to Spear for the final two miles. In 2001 the course changed to get completely off the streets and avoiding traffic entirely. Completed in 2001, the South Burlington bike path now provides a scenic and safe course for the runners.

History of the Art Tudhope 10K

The Art Tudhope 10K is one of the oldest races in Vermont. It was started in 1971 by Larry Kimball. The race was to honor former UVM hall of famer Colonel Arthur Tudhope. He was very active in local running and was a teacher and coach at the Essex Junction High School (now ADL middle school).

The race started as a 5K cross country run at the ADL school. It then migrated further out in Essex to Trollheim for a year before moving to Shelburne at the site of then race director Charlie Kellogg and became 10K. Later it moved again to Shelburne Beach. The last course change came in 1998 when the Rhoads took over race directing responsibilities. The turn around was moved so that runners went to the covered bridge at Charlotte Beach. From 2000 until 2004 the race was called the “Apple Harvest 10K” because of the races apple themes – it runs through apple orchards during apple season and often gives out apple pies and cider as prizes. For 2005 the name was changed back to “Art Tudhope 10K” to further honor Art Tudhope’s contributions to the running community. The course was officially certified in 2001.

Thanks to all Art Tudhope 10K race directors: Larry Kimball, Al and Sally Duval: 1977, Charlie Kellogg, Jon Kohn, Dave Fields, Ellen Rainville, Dave Casey, Linda & Tom Rhoads: 1998-2000, Forrest Lemoine: 2001, Courtney Gates and Monica Moran 2002-2003, Matt and Emily Gallagher: 2004-2008, Jessica Bolduc: 2009-Present

History of the Clarence DeMar Road Race

The Clarence DeMar Road Race was started in 1983 by Mike Simpson at the suggestion of Ray Allen. Clarence DeMar lived in South Hero and attended UVM and later became famous for winning 7 Boston Marathons, a record that still stands today. Originally a 5K and 10K course, in 2008 it was shortened to only have a 5K due to increasing numbers of participants and logistical issues. The current certified course is entirely on South Street and perfectly straight with a slight uphill for the first 2.75K and a slight downhill for the last 2.25K. The course goes past Clarence’s house twice. The race is a big family event and is followed by the South Hero Fourth of July parade. A free quarter mile kid’s race was added in 2008 in the schoolyard. In 1999 the race officially became a GMAA event. The course was officially certified in 2001.

History of the Common to Common 30K

The Common to Common 30K is the GMAA’s newest race. The course and race were designed by Steve Eustis in 2003. Noting that there were no races in Vermont between a half and full marathon, there seemed an opportunity to provide a fall marathon training race, a marathon alternative, and a marathon “step up” (for those working towards the marathon distance). The title is loosly based on the defunct “Fort to Fort 30K” from the 1980s at Fort Ticonderoga, NY. Runners travel between the historic Vermont “commons” of Essex and Westford on their journey through rural farm and forest land. The course is designed so that only 20 volunteers are needed to serve the racers with a quality experience (7 aid stations, few intersections, certified, all mile and 5K intervals marked). It is part loop and part out and back (enough out and back that a runner should be able to see the entire field). The race starts and ends at the historic Memorial Hall on the common in Essex Center. Medallions are given to all finishers to recognize the accomplishment of the distance.

Hall of fame

By popular demand, here is the hall of fame list for the Common to Common 30K, run annually in Essex Center, VT since 2004. To make this list, a runner has finished every Common to Common 30K since the race’s inception. The second category, “Volunteer Hall of Famer”, recognizes those that have finished or volunteered for every 30K. Some have always volunteered and some have alternated running and volunteering.

Women Hall of Famers: Ellie Bouffard.

Men Hall of Famers: Chuck Arnold.

Volunteer Hall of Famers: Steve Eustis, Bill Everett, Charlie Windisch.

Thanks to all Common to Common 30K race directors: Steve Eustis 2004-present

The first ran from 1971-1977 in Colchester. ’71 and ’72 were a two loop course which included Winooski. ’73-’77 were run on a five loop course using Lakeshore, Prim and Porter’s Point roads. The second marathon in the series was called the Green Mountain Island Marathon and was held from 1978-1985 in the islands. The course was a loop of the island. The third marathon in the series is called the Green Mountain Marathon has been held since 1986 and is an out and back course on the west side of the island.

History of the Kaynor’s Sap Run

The Kaynor’s Sap Run is a unique Vermont race. It has even been mentioned in Runner’s World for its uniqueness. It was started by Chapin and Donna Kaynor and Bruce Cunningham in 1979. Originally intended to be a 10K race, 6.0 miles turned out to be the correct distance for the loop and the out and back on the dead end road that Kaynor’s sugarhouse is on. From 1979-83 the race was held around the third Sunday in March to coincide with the height of sugaring season, and sugar-on-snow was served to all who came (often over 100 people including families). Since 1985, the race has been held in April (for the chance at better weather) with cider and doughnuts for everyone.

The race conditions are highly variable for this early spring race – thick mud, frozen roads or smooth dry roads – snow, ice, rain or warm sun – 15, 45 or 60 degrees. In 2000 the race took place in a blizzard – and 16 hardy souls (or fools) braved the weather to complete the race!

The Sap Run is the first “real” race of the year and many Boston Marathon bound runners use it as a last tune up. Awards are only given out randomly, not for speed. The race has always had a quality, but low key feel that area runners enjoy.

Thanks to Chapin and Donna for putting on such a nice race for 30 years!! Thanks to all the race directors who are continuing the tradition: Steve Eustis: 2010-2013, Tom Kelly and Meredith White: 2013-present.

History of the Partners Race

The Partners Race is a unique Vermont race. It was started by Mike and Claudia Sullivan in 1979 and was intended to be 5.0 miles. Early measurements showed the race to be 4.8 miles and it was kept the same for 28 races. In 2007 the club decided to certify the course and extend it to a true 5 miler. The start was moved up Bolger Hill Road, which gives the course a net drop of 50 feet – a useful tool to combat Shillhammer Hill at mile 2! The certification showed the original course to be exactly 4.725 miles. While the hills can be as challenging as the Rollin Irish hills, the shorter distance, shade, and scenery make it all worthwhile. Scoring for the race is done by adding ages and times of male-female pairs. Many runners come to the race paired up, but others plot for a fast and age appropriate partner to secure a fast team time. There are always a few “non-paired” singles that comprise a singles division. An award is also given to the fastest “true couple” (married).

In 2007 another race change was to move the race to early May to take the “Trollheim weekend” after that race completed its historic run. The earlier date will eliminate the Clarence DeMar – Partners “within a week” scheduling syndrome as well as offer cooler temperatures. The race was not held in 1995. Thanks to the race directors who have made this race a success: 1979-87: Mike and Claudia Sullivan, Tom and Nancy McGann: 1988-1989, Bill and Chris Griffin: 1990, Barb and Dave Capen: 1991-2003, Mark Wanner: 2004, Sue Turcotte: 2005, Nathan Fields: 2006-present.

History of the Rollin Irish Half Marathon

The Rollin Irish Half Marathon was started as “Kurt’s and Sherry’s Half Marathon”. Kurt Lauenstein trained on this scenic, hilly course and thought others would enjoy it too. The race was originally held in July but has steadily moved back until late April. It has become a favorite “tune up” for those runners tackling the Vermont City Marathon, held every Memorial Day weekend. The course was USATF certified in 1992.

The Rollin Irish Half Marathon has been directed by MANY people! Thanks to all race directors: Kurt Lauenstein and Sherry Dickstein: 1979-1980, Ken Boyd: 1981, Tom Phillips: 1982, Larry Kimball and Ken Austin: 1983, Steve Herrero and Jen Lucas: 1984, Howie Atherton: 1985, Steve Farrow: 1986, Dave Fields: 1987-1991, Bill Everett: 1992, Joe Connelly and Rick Cleary: 1993-1997, Sharon Crowley and Rex Kho: 1998, Karen Lang and Bill Everett: 1999, Jamey Eason: 2000, Jim and Sue Paulsen: 2001-2003, Chip Winner: 2004, Carolyn Bever: 2005-2009; Randi Brevik: 2010-2012, Jim Farrington: 2013-2014, Lisa Mallobar: 2015, Bob Sayers, Russ Cooke, Ellie Bouffard:2016.

History of the Round Church Women’s Run

The Round Church Women’s Run is the oldest women’s only race in Vermont. It started in 1979 when the number of women runners was increasing, to help encourage more to join the sport. It was also the first race to have regular age groups for women. Prior to the first race, there was often only two women age groups – 0-24 and 25+. The 25 year old split was to separate high school and college runners from “housewives”. (This is how the a 10/26/1979 Burlington Free Press article quoted women over age 25 when talking about running!) Women’s running has certainly come a long way since 1979. Some people have questioned whether we still need a women’s only race – the answer appears to be yes. The race still attracts many new runners, including many under the age of 13 involved in various girl running programs. Additionally, it is nice for the fast women to be the first across the finish line and lead a race with no one in front of them.

The Round Church Women’s Run has had many directors over the years: Dianne Schullenberger, Amy Valentine, John Scheer, Andrea Houlihan, Deb Tirrito, Michelle Everleth, Kasie Enman, Martha Keenan, Lori Hennessey, Sylvia Frisbee and others. Thanks to all for making this a quality race!

History of the Scholarship Cross Country 5K

The Scholarship Cross Country 5K is one of GMAA’s younger races. It was started by Rick Blount with help from Tom Weaver. Rick advertised the race with the theme, “You mean you live in Vermont and don’t run in the woods?” Red Rocks Park in South Burlington provides an ideal course for a summer cross country race – fully shaded with paths that are wide with good footing. There are even a couple nice views of Lake Champlain. The race usually attracts many teenagers preparing for the upcoming fall cross country season.

This race is used by the GMAA to help raise money for its scholarship fund. Annually, the GMAA provides two scholarships to graduating seniors who plan to attend college. In 2003 the scholarships were $500 each.

Thanks to all Scholarship Cross Country race directors: Rick Blount: 1993, Peter Rollins: 1994, Roberta Kisebach: 1995-1999, Don and Betty Lacharite: 2000, Mike DeSanto: 2001-2004, Jessica Cover: 2005-2008, Norm Larson, Ken Schatz, Pascal Cheng: 2009-2011, Ken Schatz and Pascal Cheng:2012, Addison Kasmarek:2013-present.

History of the Turkey Trot

The Turkey Trot is one of the GMAA’s oldest races. The race has always been at UVM but its distance and format have changed over the years. In the begining the race distance was disclosed at the start. Other years runners had to predict their time. Eventually the race settled on the 5K distance and used the UVM women’s cross country race course. It has become more of a fun run with some raffle prizes and no awards so runners can head home soon after finishing and prepare for their feasts. In the 21st century the race has become a staple of the Thanksgiving holiday with numbers growing from around 200 to over 500 – one of the largest races in Vermont. The entrance fees and food donations have always led to a sizable donation to the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf. The present race course has been in use since the completion of the bike path in 2001 and and was a measured 5K with formal certification coming in 2005.
